LG Electronics (LG) today announced the start of sales of the world's first 8K OLED TV (model 88Z9) with pre-orders for the 88-inch post starting this week in South Korea. Availability in the major markets of North America and Europe will follow in the third quarter.
As the largest OLED TV from LG to date, the 8K OLED TV is an innovation made possible by LG's unparalleled display technology. This impressive new model emphasizes the superiority of OLED over conventional LED displays and offers an unparalleled visual experience. The TV uses an advanced panel with over 33 million self-emitting pixels to deliver the iconic image quality of LG's OLED TV, ensuring realistic colors in a wide viewing angle, infinite contrast ratio, and true blacks . Images are exceptionally sharp on the 88-inch TV with Ultra HD 8K resolution (7,680 x 4,320) equivalent to 16 times the number of pixels in Full HD and four times that of UHD resolution.
The superior performance of LG's 8K OLED panel is enhanced by the company's second generation α (Alpha) 9 Gen 2 8K intelligent processor. The processor improves image and sound quality through in-depth learning technology and access to a vast database of visual information. This allows the chip to optimize the content by recognizing the quality of the source and implementing the best algorithm guaranteeing images of incredible beauty. With the α9 Gen 2 8K processor, LG's 8-inch 88-inch 88-inch OLED TV boasts enhanced processing capabilities with efficient 8K upconversion and improved 6-step 4-step noise reduction in the 4K version, providing an 8K image really realistic when upgrading a content of 4K (3840 x 2160) or 2K (1920 x 1080). The processor also analyzes the ambient conditions to achieve the perfect level of screen brightness.
The LG 88Z9 increases the viewer's immersion with its impressive audio performance. Sound quality is enhanced by an intelligent algorithm that can audibly mix two-channel audio to produce compelling virtual 5.1 surround sound. In-depth learning dramatically improves output by analyzing source content to produce better sound effects in movies, deeper bass in music and clearer voices during sports events. Users can adjust the sound according to viewing conditions or let the TV set the best sound levels according to the environment.
To ensure an exceptional HDR experience, the LG 8K OLED TV comes with Dolby Atmos for incredibly realistic sound and intelligent content tuning for Dolby Vision. The TV supports HDMI 2.1, which allows viewers to enjoy 8K content at a rate of 60 frames per second. The TV also supports Low Auto Latency (ALLM) mode, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC).
In some markets, the LG 8K OLED TV will feature built-in versions of the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for optimal flexibility, convenience and control of the TV and connected smart devices.
"Being the first to market the world's first and largest 8K OLED TV is a testament to our determination to lead the premium television segment and deliver the ultimate viewing experience," said Brian Kwon, president of mobile communications and LG home entertainment. "LG has been a pioneer in the commercialization of OLED and we will continue to introduce advanced television technologies that push the boundaries of what is possible in home entertainment."
