LG quitting Android is not good for anyone – except LG

You might not remember it, but there was a time when LG was an Android powerhouse making the best Android phones money could buy. Phones like the LG G2 had the top of the line while cheap, powerful phones like the Optimus G offered more for the money than whatever done today. Pick almost every phone that LG made during this time and you’ve seen three things:

• This phone is hard as nails.
• This phone is very fast.
• The version of Android LG designed for this phone was trash can.

Now LG is probably done building phones because there is no money to be made by doing so. Some people in the company say no, others have more information on all of this and other companies are even willing to buy. Whatever happens, it will mean the death of LG as we know it today.

It’s hardly surprising if you look at what phones are selling, how they’re sold, and why people are buying them – and you see LG losing out in all categories.

We are an Android site and collectively we know everything there is to know about Android. Yes, that’s a pretty big and bold statement, but it’s true. Just because we don’t write down all the little technical things and look at the big picture doesn’t mean we don’t understand all the little technical things. We are also a mobile site and not afraid to talk about the phone that everyone seems to love to hate: the iPhone. You can’t talk about the impending demise of LG’s mobile division without talking about mobile as a whole.

“Mobile” has a lot of companies, but there are only three that make all the money.

Mobile as a category of consumer technology is strange. The three companies that have all the wit and make all the profits are Apple, Google and Samsung. Google likes to pull all of its money out of the shadows, but if you want to grab your credit card and go out to buy the best smartphone you can buy today, be sure to buy a variant of a Galaxy S21 or more. ‘an iPhone 12. Some companies accept cash hemorrhages in today’s mobile market for one reason or another. Google loves spending money on their Pixel vanity project. Yes, I said it. Fight me. OnePlus can lose money in one division and make up for the losses through other parts of the business by offering unique accessories that every OnePlus phone buyer wants.

When you make the best TV on the market, you make a lot of money selling it.

LG could go this route because the money it makes on things like smart TVs, smart washing machines or smart soundbars can easily bolster its smartphone division, but it makes more sense to get rid of that smartphone division and continue to work on ThinQ products that work within high-selling ecosystems, such as those offered by Google and Apple. A phone like the LG Wing may be a new idea, but the reality is, it’s an anchor too. LG just doesn’t need that dead weight.

It’s there that we to lose. LG, like all of the companies that helped shape Android, made things better with their “dumb” ideas. 3D screens on phones, gaming phones with fast but battery-hungry chips from NVIDIA and software to turn the rest down when you want to play CoD Mobile are all ideas from LG. And the same goes for swivel phones that look like boomerangs or phones with drop-down screens that haven’t been made yet.

But it was the same for the first note; it was comically huge and “nobody wants a stylus” was the summary of every review when it first started. Or a foldable phone: fragile, excessive and “stupidly” high. we need companies like LG and Samsung are trying silly things because that’s how you find the only good idea that sticks. You’ll never find it at Apple, which thinks that adding an old sensor to a card by the camera is pretty innovative. Apple is playing the security card; the Samsungs and LGs of the world have not.

When and how LG abandons its phone division is still a mess filled with rumors where no one knows absolute truths. But it will happen eventually, and we’ll all be worse off when it does.
