Fortunately the censor took the night
The nicest part of All-Star games lately has been the unprecedented access to players. When the game doesn’t matter, it doesn’t hurt to put a microphone on a player and have them talk to the broadcast booth during the game. And that leads to fun times like Freddie Freeman playing a round to joke with Joe Buck and John Smoltz, revealing that he dreaded having to stand next to Aaron Judge.
But wiring a jovial first baseman for sound during the second inning is a lot different than tying a mic to a fiery closer as he walks in to shut the door in the ninth, especially if he thinks his microphone is not working. not.
When White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks had been fitted with an earpiece and microphone when he walked in to close the game, Buck intended to speak with him as he threw the final frame. But Hendriks couldn’t hear Buck in his ear.
“Liam is wearing a microphone,” Buck said early in the round. “I don’t know if Liam can hear us. Can you hear us, Liam? No. We will leave him alone.
Because he could only hear silence in his earpiece, Hendriks was tricked into believing his microphone wasn’t working either, so he continued to go about his business as if the millions of people watching at home weren’t couldn’t hear it. The problem was … we could.
Turns out Hendriks has a tendency to curse himself when he makes mistakes on the mound. After throwing a bullet that shatters into the dirt at Omar Narváez, he unleashed a very enthusiastic “fuck shit”!
When he missed low with a fastball to Ozzie Albies, he went on a rampage with a “fucking god even more colorful, fuck that!”
Albies managed to tear up a brace that kept the game alive, at which point AL wide receiver Mike Zunino came out to chat with Hendriks to go over the signs and let him know all of America was able to hear him .
“You give what people want, you get taken to the microphone,” Zunino said.
“No, that doesn’t work,” replied Hendriks. “I didn’t hear anything the whole round.”
Oops.
After the match, Hendriks was informed that everyone could really hear him and he said he would have recalled profanity if he had been aware of the size of his audience.
“I would have been a little more aware of (my word choice) if I had heard them,” Hendriks told reporters. “And it all turned out that the volume was too low. Probably my fault. Probably user error. It makes interesting TV, I’m sure. Hopefully the guy who beeped was about.
The tech snafu allowed viewers to take a closer look at Hendriks’ alter ego on the pitch.
“My wife likes to call it ‘white line fever’,” he said. “So I’m jovial and tend to be a bit more fluid and joke off the pitch. In the field, she likes to call him, me being closer to a psychopath than a normal person. I tend to agree with her. I tend to get lively and swear at it. I’m having fun there, that’s the most important thing.
