Leave it to Elon Musk to think about putting life on other planets before we even return to the moon.
Musk said that SpaceX’s Starship rockets’ ability is “designed to make life multiplanetary,” before ultimately building a city on Mars.

“It is designed to make life multiplanetary, otherwise exaggerated for the mere activity of the Earth sector!” Musk tweeted. “The mass of the fleet of orbiting ships per year will be more than 1,000 times greater than all current land rockets combined, including Falcon. Necessary, for a city on Mars.”

Musk also noted that it appears the “marginal cost of a launch” will be less than $ 1 million to send more than 100 tons of supplies into orbit.
Musk’s discussion of Starship’s capabilities comes after SpaceX transported NASA astronauts to the International Space Station via its first operational launch SpaceX Crew Dragon, a milestone for the space program.
On Sunday, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket transported the Crew Dragon spacecraft from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The craft, named Resilience by the crew, reached the ISS around 11 p.m. ET on Monday.
This isn’t the first time Musk has spoken of SpaceX – which is rapidly developing its Starlink satellite internet system – in the context of making humanity a multi-planetary species.
After SpaceX received official certification from NASA to transport astronauts to the ISS earlier this month, in what Musk called a “great honor,” Musk, 49, added the news would help inspire “Confidence in our efforts to return to the Moon, travel to Mars and ultimately help humanity become multiplanetary.
Last month, Musk, who previously advocated dropping nuclear weapons on Mars to make it more habitable, set a four-year timeline for an unmanned SpaceX mission to Mars, but warned that the timeline was “only ‘a guess “.

In 2018, the CEOs of SpaceX and Tesla said there was a “70% chance” that he would move to Mars, but warned that there was a “good chance” of dying on the way to the red planet. Two years earlier, he had presented an ambitious plan to put human life on Mars.
NASA’s long-term goal is to send a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s.
