LINCOLN, Nb. Holmes Lake was boiling on Saturday morning despite poor forecasts for Lincoln's 16th annual polar dive.
"We are looking for 150 people who have signed up to dive," said Carolyn Chamberlin of Special Olympics Nebraska. "I think people are brave, they come here, hopefully we can bring them here and put them in the water before the blizzard."
The Polar Plunge is a fundraiser to support Special Olympics Nebraska, which helps thousands of disabled people in the state.
"It's a very strong statement to the community that the work we're doing is important," Chamberlin said. "It's not because someone is different that he deserves the same chances in society as everyone else."
Mary Poppins, Hawaiian, Legos, but some courageous people opted for much less.
"We wanted it to get even colder, it would not be enough, I think, next year if it could come back stronger, a polar vortex," said a participant at Polar Plunge.
In the end, people say that this is not even the coldest year for the event and that even this blizzard warning could not keep them away.
