LinkedIn is dropping Stories

LinkedIn is shutting down its short-lived Stories product, the company said on Tuesday. The company plans to “remove the current Stories experience by the end of September,” according to Liz Li, senior product manager. The Snapchat-style video stories were first released in February 2020 during internal testing.

Part of the reason for the shutdown is that LinkedIn has learned that users just don’t want the video to go away. “In developing stories, we assumed that people wouldn’t want informal videos attached to their profile, and that the ephemeral would reduce the barriers people feel to posting,” Li said. Turns out, you want to create lasting videos that tell your professional story in a more personal way and that showcase both your personality and your expertise. ”

LinkedIn’s move follows Twitter’s shutdown of Fleets, its Stories-type product, in July. Like LinkedIn, Twitter observed that users did not respond to ephemeral videos the way they wanted. “We were hoping Fleets would help more people feel comfortable joining the conversation on Twitter,” Ilya Brown, vice president of products at Twitter, said on Twitter blog. “But since we introduced Fleets to everyone, we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets as we had hoped. ”

The two closures could signal a larger decline in ephemeral video products among social media companies. However, it seems unlikely that Snapchat or Instagram will abandon their Stories products anytime soon.
