Lionel Messi will not re-sign with Barcelona, the club announced on Thursday.
The Spanish club said in a statement that they could not afford to resign Messi due to “economic and structural” problems. Messi, 34, has been a free agent since his previous terms expired on June 30.

The club said in a statement: “Despite an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalized due to economic obstacles and structural [Spanish LaLiga regulations].
“In view of this situation, Lionel Messi will not remain linked with FC Barcelona. Both sides deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club could not ultimately be granted.
“Barça would like to thank with all their hearts the player’s contribution to the improvement of the institution and wish him the best in his personal and professional life.”
