The Matt Patricia era is over in Detroit. On Saturday, the Lions announced that they had relieved head coach, as well as general manager Bob Quinn of their duties after a 4-7 start to the 2020 season. That comes immediately after a 41-25 loss to the Houston Texans at Thanksgiving in Week 12. Previously, in Week 11, the Lions were shut out at the hands of the Carolina Panthers.
Patricia first joined the Lions head coach in 2018 after spending nearly a decade and a half with the New England Patriots organization. As for Quinn, he also came from the Patriots organization, although starting in 2016.
While Patricia’s arrival promised to transform the franchise by claiming after helping lead New England to three Super Bowl titles as a defensive coordinator, her tenure as the Lions head coach was anything but successful. Over the two and a half seasons as a head coach, Patricia finished with a 13-29-1 record (.314 winning percentage). As a benchmark, Jim Caldwell, who Patricia replaced, went 36-28 (.563 winning percentage) during his tenure in Detroit.
As this season approached, it was very clear that Patricia and Quinn were in the hot seat. In December 2019, Martha Ford, then owner, and Sheila Ford Hamp, then Vice President (now owner), wrote an open letter to fans in which they stated that “we expect Lions to be playoff contenders. in 2020. ” With this failing to materialize as the schedule is set to move to December in 2020, the property has decided to cut losses and reset.
From there, the Lions will look to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell as interim head coach, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Bevell has been the CO in Detroit for the past two seasons. Previously, he held the same position with the Seattle Seahawks from 2011 to 2017 and helped lead the franchise to a Super Bowl XLVIII title.
