The Lions have one big name in mind for their GM role: Seahawks GM John Schneider.

Detroit is considering suing Schneider, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

If Schneider had full authority over the Seahawks’ staff, the Lions would not be allowed to approach him about their job opening. But with Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll having primary authority on staff, the Lions would offer Schneider a step forward with the last word on their roster. This allows them to approach Schneider under league rules, and that may be enough to make Schneider consider leaving Seattle.

The Lions fired general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia this season. If Schneider was hired, then he would be in charge of hiring the next Lions head coach.

The position at Detroit may not be particularly attractive, given the shortage of talent on the roster and the squad’s poor salary cap situation. But if Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp is ready to offer Schneider enough money and enough authority, a big name in the staff world could make it to Detroit.
