Dropping longtime franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford would have had a negative short-term impact on the Detroit Lions. This is part of the plan for the reconstruction project devised by new managing director Brad Holmes and his staff.
So far this offseason, no NFL team has cost themselves more of an impact on the winning column than the Lions by agreeing to trade Stafford at the Rams for QB Jared Goff. Detroit’s upcoming compensation plan in the deal does not yet factor in Pro Football Focus’s “wins over replacement” assessment for the product on the field.
The Rams lead the Most Improved list in terms of adding WARs, almost entirely in the form of Stafford taking over from Goff in Sean McVay’s offense. Lions are at the other end of the list.
It will be interesting to revisit the additions / subtractions of WAR once free agency begins on March 17th. Hopefully the Lions make some positive additions to make up for the massive loss of Stafford and free agent receivers who are also expected to leave.
