Lions open $ 15million cap by restructuring Jared Goff contract

The Lions added a lot of headroom space by restructuring their new quarterback’s contract.

ESPN’s Field Yates reports that the Lions have converted $ 20 million from Jared Goff’s base salary as a signing bonus. The move opens up $ 15 million in ceiling space for the remainder of the offseason.

Goff’s contract runs until 2024 and cap fees for the next three years will increase by $ 5 million following the conversion.

That would leave around $ 30 million in dead money on the ceiling if the team were to move on without Goff next year, so it looks like the move will extend their time in Detroit at least until the 2022 season. Opinions about whether that’s a good thing or not will be shaped by how Goff does once he’s on the pitch later this year.
