Eight people in four states, including one in New Jersey, have been hospitalized for listeria-related cold cuts and cheese, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.
Health officials did not specify where, in New Jersey, the infection had been reported.
One death has been reported in Michigan, said the CDC. Pennsylvania is the fourth state where cases have been reported.
Epidemiological and biological data indicate that meats and cheeses sliced at deli counters could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and make people sick, the CDC said.
Only one common supplier of deli products has not been identified.
Those who became ill said during interviews that they had eaten different types and brands of products, including meats and cheese purchased and sliced at various deli counters, according to the CDC.
Listeria specimens from these individuals were collected from 13 November 2016 to 4 March this year.
Sick people are between 40 and 88 years old, with the median age being 57 years old. Thirty-eight percent are women.
