Almost immediately, the treatment of glioblastoma, the most aggressive brain tumor, can be significantly improved. Scientists at the University of Health Sciences (LSMU) are developing a novel therapeutic approach to direct anticancer drugs to the tumor. This would increase the risk of destruction and reduce the side effects of the treatment, according to a press release from the university.

According to the scientist, the effectiveness of the ultimate method will be clearly established after clinical trials, which will show whether the foundations of new therapies are successful.

Current treatment is inefficient

Gliomas – the most common forms of brain tumors. The worst forms of glioblastoma – the treatment is complex today and the survival time is very short.

According to the doctor, this form of tumor is complicated by the fact that healthy brain tissue is usually disseminated and that, therefore, the entire tumor can not be eliminated.

The most commonly used treatment methods are radiotherapy or chemotherapy, as well as clinical trials with other newer therapies, immunotherapy and bone marrow therapy.

"Currently, glioblastoma has a moderate survival time of 12 to 18 months, depending on different clinics, because current treatment methods are not able to completely destroy tumor cells and prevent the disease from becoming more active. "says Dr. Skavainas.
