The paradox: we watch movies illegally because we are overfished

Although the rate of piracy is decreasing in Lithuania, we are still the third most abusive country in Europe, which leads to a paradoxical situation, because we do not have the possibility to watch movies legally, but companies do not want to invest. This is how Justas Prascevičius, project manager of the AGATA badociation, said LRT RADIJU.

Paradox: we watch movies illegally because we are nicknamed [19659003] – The tradition of the theft of intellectual property in Lithuania is still not in decline

– The tradition disappears little by little, but it still exists, and it is the main problem facing authors, performers. free of charge, although it should be paid for this, as well as for every work done.

The situation improves significantly. There are some reasons. First of all – the emergence of legal content, legal platforms. This is particularly evident in the field of music where international and Lithuanian companies operate – the same platform developed by our badociation, pakartot.lt, which contains Lithuanian music, as well as Spotify and other platforms. They provide this content legally and comfortably, thus eliminating some of the people who were hackers only because they could not legally listen to anything.

The film industry is a little harder, but the situation slightly improves. This does not mean that we are leading this area.

– Have you calculated how many Lithuanian authors lose because of the fact that people "steal a little"?

– Those "slightly injured" are made up of the same people. In fact, it is very difficult to calculate. Film resellers suffer the greatest losses. We could talk about local designers. […] Lithuanian film distributors suffer millions of losses, especially big films. The film "Zero" directed by Emile Wellev has been played several times. There are millions of euros lost there.

– We still have sites that offer illegal content. For example, we all know that Linkomania's content is illegal. But there are other sites like films.in. There you can watch movies there for accumulated points that you can buy for real money. It looks like a legal way. Is it true?

– This seems to be a way to get money for those who create these sites and who are causing this kind of content.

Let's start with the fact that we, as listeners or viewers, do not have enough information, we are not educated. What will come from the time of the school, where we talk about intellectual property, where we will talk about the fact that the work is important and respectful, and the creator must receive remuneration.

We see a seemingly legitimate website in which you have to log in to pay for money. So think that the money goes to the interpreter or the developer, in fact, looks illegally. This is a problem. Those who create such sites do so very quickly and understand very quickly how to make it legal.

There are still some nuances that help to separate. For example, the quality of the film is bad and good. Also – its strange, unprofessional. Ability to pay by SMS. Neither Netflix nor the Lithuanian site "epasaka.lt" in Lithuania, the "Film Foundation", "Amazon", or the same LRT Mediatek – no one allows you to pay or buy credits by SMS. Must be bank orders that require the payment of a subscription. It's one of the nuances.

Another nuance is that most of these sites do not have contacts, where to contact support for a website, help or similar issues. Often there is a lot of advertising, ie there are promotional banners for pop-ups that you are forced to see. These are the criteria.

– But these legitimate sites also have a lot of publicity.

– Yes, but again, it is education. Knowing what it should look like is separate, legal. There are several criteria that you can perceive to try to distinguish between the bad and the bad.

Of course, there is always a Google search engine where you can try to check. Another thing, often on illegal sites, it is written that all rights belong to the authors, that is to say there the developers of sites did not buy these rights. In this way, they seem to try to escape their responsibilities.

– We have already partially answered the question of how I view the film legally. Which sites would you recommend to watch?

– These sites are. The project, which started last year – the organization of intellectual property of the European Union (EU), has launched and developed such a project, which can be found online through the Introduction of agorateka.eu. You will find a map of all EU countries where you can see which legal sites are working in these countries. These are sites where you can read books, watch videos and listen to music.

– But sometimes we are faced with such a problem that, for example, Netflix does not have all the content available in France, for example, in France or Germany. Why this difference?

– We are now back to the scale of piracy, with the fact that we are third in Europe in terms of piracy. This creates a barrier that does not allow access to all content.

Suppose the same Internet providers can create platforms capable of driving movies or even the latest series of "Throne Wars". We could watch them. But it costs them money because they need to buy licenses. They calculate how much money can actually be invested, since the same content is downloaded for free from illegal sites.

We come back to the fact that we are killing a lot. As a result, it is difficult for a commercial operator to maintain such sites, to buy licenses. As a result, the content shrinks to us.

– We can say that because we ourselves are thieves, such a vicious circle is forming – there is no way to access it, we sometimes steal from time to time, but because we are a little stolen and we do not have access to a large legal content.

– It's also with our creations, our actors, writers, performers, musicians, etc. t The same goes again. If you rob them of some stolen money, so that they can do what they can best, […] they are forced to find a second extra job, to indulge in to other activities and can not devote all their time to creativity.

Then we start talking about the fact that our work is a little lower, why we are not in Eurovision, and so on. t All this is composed. That developers have a more stable income, less likely to distract them, so that they can devote more time to their professionalism and development.

– How many different actions help explain to people that it is also a robbery?

– There are many ways to stop hacking. There are legal moments of regulation. You can block, reduce access. Another very important aspect is that of education. […] Some people just do not think about what they do. Visiting something in the countryside may be at the origin of something, maybe someone does not like it, but they see it anyway and maybe that's something else. they will think about it next time.

I'm not saying that they're not going to send, but maybe they're going to look at the legal sites in advance – maybe I can listen to this song Spotify or Repeat . Maybe without finding them, they will look somewhere on illegal sites. I think it helps

It is necessary to educate as early as the small days, understanding that these works belong to somebody. The same pictures that you put in a report belong to someone else as well. It is necessary to separate, to think and to know about it. It is essential that you do not become a thief who steals not because you want to steal, but out of ignorance. His education, his campaign, is a very important part of our society to simply think differently and get rid of this problem.

– Indeed, I remember, at school, really, when you had to decorate a report or any other task page, you just copied any image and you did not even not thought. Even none of the teachers said that it was necessary to add a link to who this picture was.

– Yes. We do not speak, of course, that you and the newspapers can not use the image that you must necessarily call the artist or the representative of the artist (laughs). Of course, you can use it for your own purposes, but by placing a link, mentioning the author is just beautiful things you refer to (that you can read, maybe only you and your teacher), show a certain level of education and intelligence.

Our teachers who taught my time and the youngest (I do not even talk about older people) also do not have the proper training because there are just too few. Even it is not clear who should be badigned to this area – is it ethical, is it something else or should it be mentioned in all lessons? This again creates opportunities for this ignorance to grow.
