The Municipal Public Health Bureau of Kaunas City recommends paying special attention to the purchase of water or other beverages in plastic bottles. What are the labeled packages – the safest?

According to the public health specialist, Giedrė Macaitienė, although everyone has the opportunity to buy water or another drink in a plastic bottle, we often think about the packaging of the beverage. He is constantly in contact with the package and stays there often for several days and longer, so that some of the contents of the package can get into the drink and do not really want it in the foods we eat. All plastic containers are carefully labeled with certain marks (the mark is usually found at the bottom of the capsule, in the lower part of the packaging) to be considered.

Plastic bottles

PET or PETE, – polyethylene terephthalate

Packages for soft drinks, water, fruit juice, detergents, detergents.

HDP, or HDPE, high density polyethylene

Opaque milk, water, bleach, shampoo packages, some plastic bags.

PVC or 3V, – polyvinyl chloride

Packaging film, plastic bottles, oil, detergents, bottles of glbad cleaners. PVC, also called polyvinyl chloride or vinyl, is particularly dangerous for human health and the environment. PVC has been shown to cause cancer in people who use it. PVC contains a lot of chlorine. In the manufacture of PVC, various additives and stabilizers, such as lead, plasticizers are used. PVC is the most recycled plastic because of its high content of chlorine and additives. The production and incineration of PVC causes the formation of dioxins which, even in small quantities, reduce the weight of infants, cause developmental problems, weaken the immune system and impoverish the hormonal system.

LDPE – low density polyethylene

Bags and most movies to pack food, bottles.

Soup packages, broths, syrups, yogurts, dark packs, baby bottles.

Plastic bottles

Styrofoam food containers, egg cartons, disposable cups, disposable crockery, opaque plastic cutlery. Styrene can be released from polystyrene, which has a negative effect on the brain and the nervous system.

Other (OTHER) – usually polycarbonate

Bottles for babies, inner layer of cans, translucent plastic, large bottles of water. The new bioplasty can also be indicated by the number "7". The polycarbonate plastic uses bisphenol A, which mimics the activity of estrogen, a human body hormone, and distorts vital information sent to various organs. It promotes the emergence of cancerous diseases, which have been shown to cause various genetic changes, "errors" in the chromosome chain, causing miscarriages.

According to public health specialist Giedrė Macaitienė, it is preferable to use a reusable packaging glbad. If you choose a plastic package, do not forget that the plastics PETE (1), HDPE (2), LDPE (4) and PP (5) are the safest to use for food. The others (OTHERS) (7) are a good choice only if it is a bioplastic. Take a few moments to check the bottom of the bottle, choose the one that is the safest.
