JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – UPDATE 2:50 a.m .: Lincoln University will be closed on Thursday, May 23, said LU spokeswoman Misty Young. The campus will reopen on Tuesday.
UPDATE 2H30: The Jefferson City Police Department was assessing the damage in the Jefferson City area on Thursday morning.
Authorities focused on the area of Ellis Boulevard and Highway 54. Nobody was killed during the storm that hit the area on Thursday morning at 2 pm.
The power lines were down and many buildings were damaged, according to Lieutenant David Williams of the JCPD.
UPDATE: The Jefferson City Police Department said that he was assessing the damage to Jefferson City. The teams try to locate the damage and search for injured residents.
The ministry is asking people to stay away from the affected areas.
A press briefing is scheduled for 2 am in the Cole County Sheriff's Department. ABC 17 News will be there.
ORIGINAL: Several agencies are gathering at the Cole County Head Office in Jefferson City to assess the damage caused by the storm in the Missouri Capitol.
Matthew Lindewirth, Chief of CCEMS, said fire, police and ambulance services coordinated their interventions.
Jefferson City Fire said in a Facebook message that they were actively responding to serious damage.
"All the big tornadoes have hit parts of Jefferson City, all the Jefferson City firefighters have been called back and are starting relief operations, please pray for our citizens," he added.
Missouri Task Force 1 was activated at the request of the JCFD, according to Gale Bloomenkamp, a member of the working group.
