Google is rolling out a significant update of the camera feature on its translation app. The new version of the app adds support for 60 new languages. makes translated text less jerky on user screens; and updates the underlying translation models, in some cases reducing errors in final translations by up to 85%.
This is good news for the usual users of Google Translate, where the camera feature is extremely useful for translating menus such as menus and posters. To date, this feature has been somewhat marred by poor quality translations, an unstable interface, and a limited set of languages, but this update should help improve these three issues.
The update is based on the integration of Google's artificial intelligence translation methods, also known as neural translation (NMT). These models have been integrated with Google Lens and the Translate Web version, but they also support instant camera translation.
New languages supported in the update include: Afrikaans, Arabic, Bengali, Estonian, Greek, Hindi, Igbo, Javanese, Kurdish, Latin, Latvian, Malay, Mongol, Nepali, Pashto, Persian, Samoan, Sesotho, Slovenian , Slovenian, Swahili, Thai, Vietnamese, Welsh, Xhosa, Yoruba and Zulu. The updated version of the application will also automatically detect the language to watch, which is convenient if you are traveling to an area where several languages are common.
Google says the update will be available for 1% of users today, with full deployment in the coming weeks.
