House Democrats tabled a resolution last Friday to block President Trump's efforts to erect a wall on the southern border through his emergency powers by holding congressional votes to crack down on the proclamation of the President.
In a call for journalists, Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and the representative of Texas Democrat Joaquin Castro, author of the resolution, said Trump's emergency declaration undermined the constitutional power of the Congress currency.
"The act of the president is illegal," Pelosi said. "This is violence to our Constitution and therefore to our democracy, and its declaration strikes at the heart of the American concept of our founders, which demands the separation of powers."
The Democrat-controlled House seems virtually convinced to adopt the resolution on Tuesday and put pressure on Republicans in the Senate, many of whom are concerned about Trump's action. Even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who now supports the President's ruling, had previously stated that he wished to avoid it.
One thing to noteEven so, even if the resolution were passed, Trump could veto it, forcing Congress to cancel it by a two-thirds majority in the Senate and the House.
