U.S. Senator David Perdue of Georgia will be quarantined after learning he was in contact with a staff member who tested positive for coronavirus, his campaign announced Thursday.

Perdue, 71, learned of her potential exposure Thursday morning, campaign officials said. The quarantine will force the Republican to step down from the election campaign days before Georgia’s crucial votes.

“Senator Perdue and his wife tested negative today, but on the recommendation of his doctor and as directed by the CDC, they will be quarantined,” the Perdue campaign said in a statement. “The senator and his wife have been tested regularly throughout the campaign, and the team will continue to follow CDC guidelines. Further information will be provided when available.”

Perdue will face Democrat Jon Ossoff in a runoff on January 5. Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler will face Reverend Raphael Warnock in the other contest. The results of the two races will determine the control of the Senate at the next Congress.
