Last year, CPAC represented President Trump's full membership in the GOP.
Trump had stepped out of the script, abandoning the remarks he considered "boring", and praising the success of the first year of his administration.
He also addressed other issues such as immigration: at the time, senators were trying to negotiate a compromise on the DACA (Deferred Action for Child Arrivals) policy. In the CPAC speech, Trump called Democrats "totally insensitive" and "really crazy."
Trump had also requested that teachers be armed in schools in response to the shooting of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Florida, occurring the week before the conference.
According to Trump, an armed teacher would have "shot the hell out" of the Florida killer.
Coincidentally, the president also announced new sanctions against North Korea at CPAC 2018. One year and two summits later, the sanctions could again be addressed at CPAC 2019.
Trump was removed from the Hanoi summit empty-handed last week after refusing to lift the sanctions.
