A goal from Curtis Jones and a late 2-0 lead was not enough to prevent England from escaping the group stage of the European Under-21 Championship tonight, and spirits have exploded after the final whistle. The Young Lions appeared to be heading into the round of 16 of the competition, but a 91st-minute goal from Croatian Domagoj Bradarić propelled his side against England with a head-to-head goal difference despite the 2-1 loss.
Jones, whose goal gave England their 2-0 advantage in the second half, received a second yellow, then red, card after the final whistle due to his involvement in a field brawl between the two teams. According to England Under-21 coach Aidy Boothroyd, the dust has been created by a combination of strong emotions and Croatian celebrations among England players.
“All of their staff were out on the pitch celebrating between some of our players and it just got a little tense,” said Boothroyd.
Things went a little better for the other Liverpool players in action today. Andy Robertson won Scotland with a 4-0 victory in their World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands. The left-back assisted Scotland’s fourth goal, and the victory, along with draws against Austria and Israel earlier in the international break, put Scotland in second place in Group F.
Meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri played in the first period of Switzerland’s 3-2 friendly victory over Finland. The victory capped a very successful international selection for the Swiss after the WCQ group won over Bulgaria and Lithuania.
Thiago Alcântara (Spain) and Kostas Tsimikas (Greece) were both unused substitutes for their respective national teams. Tsimikas was apparently injured in Greece’s last game, but there does not appear to be any new information on his status at the moment.
