Liverpool must fight against Barcelona

Liverpool (AFP) – Liverpool were victorious after a deadly battle against Newcastle to stay in search of the Premier League title, but could have too many injuries to call a return to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Barcelona on Tuesday.

A late double from Lionel Messi at Camp Nou on Wednesday left Jurgen Klopp's men with a mountain to climb to reverse a 3-0 defeat in the first leg if they want to reach a second consecutive final of the Champions League.

Liverpool had already overcome such deficits in the Champions League, especially in the 2005 final against AC Milan.

The hope of another famous European return in Fortress Anfield was defeated when Mohamed Salah suffered a head blow while Liverpool outscored Newcastle 3-2 on Saturday to take two points away. Ahead of Manchester City in the lead of the championship.

Salah watched a thrilling end to St. James's Park in the locker room, with substitute Divock Origi leading the match on his free-kick Xherdan Shaqiri four minutes from the end.

Origi, who also scored the winning goal in the 96th minute to beat Everton in the Merseyside derby in December, Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge made a significant contribution to supporting the club record for Liverpool this season.

"We are always ready to play and make a difference," said Andy Robertson, Liverpool left-back.

"The guys who stayed at home and those who are on the bench and do not come, they buzz for us.

"There is no selfishness in this team and that is why we are where we are today and it continues."

However, as Roberto Firmino had already been sidelined because of a groin injury, few people would give Liverpool the hope of correcting a three-goal deficit without two of their prolific three front-runners. Salah was not supposed to start.

Klopp has a hard time deciding whether it's worth draining his injured group's tank once again on Tuesday or saving his legs for the Wolves' visit to Anfield on the final day of the Premier League season.

"We are now qualified for the league final, which is great," said Klopp in the title race in the final game of the season.

Despite a sensational season, Liverpool's chances of winning either trophy are diminishing.

To hope to win a first title in 29 years, the men of Klopp have to hope that the 12 consecutive victories in Manchester City will end at home against Leicester in their match on Monday, or in Brighton on Sunday.
