COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) – On Tuesday, Walmart announced that it would no longer sell certain types of ammunition in its 4,700 stores nationwide.
Walmart accounts for over 20% of ammunition sales, but this figure is expected to fall between 6% and 9%.
This decision was made after several mass shootings over the past month, including one at its El Paso location.
"There are other outlets through which they can buy.Other ways to explore, online or other local businesses, it's not like if Walmart was the only one to sell them." said Barry Burdett, director of Burdett & Son.
Burdett believes this Walmart initiative is a way to respond to attacks that some see as an increase in gun violence.
"They are trying not to support semi-automatic firearms or have been used time and time again in shootings or tragedies that we have experienced in our country," Burdett said.
Walmart says it will not replenish ammunition such as the 5.56 and .223, commonly used in firearms as an AR-15, once they've been sold. In addition, they will no longer sell handgun ammunition.
The company also stops selling handguns in Alaska, the only state where they sell handguns.
Burdett believes that removing ammunition from law-abiding citizens only hurts those who follow it.
"We have been discussing for a long time now how we can try to solve the current societal problems and it is difficult to manage," Burdett said. "And we do not have a lot of really solid ideas will handle the problem."
Walmart also asks customers not to open their handguns to carry in their stores, even in states where this is legal.
