Location will remain hidden for mysterious steel prism found in remote southern Utah desert

ST. GEORGE – While surveying remote areas of southern Utah for bighorn sheep, a biologist aboard a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter assisting the Utah Wildlife Division spotted a strange metallic object rising from the sandstone.

Bret Hutchings, a pilot for the Utah Department of Public Safety, told St. George News that the biologist “started to say, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa – turn around. We have to go check this stuff out. “

Within minutes of turning around, they were able to locate it – a stainless steel prism rising from the ground. After landing they hiked to check it out. The object was a stainless steel prism about 10 to 12 feet high and firmly planted in the ground. Each panel is approximately 2 feet wide.

Seeing him for the first time, Hutchings said his first thought was that “someone has too much money and too much free time”.

He said he was also wondering if this was something NASA had put in the ground.

“Whoever set it up did a very good job. I guess he’s some sort of New Age artist or something that saw the 2001 movie Space Odyssey which was made in 1968. ”

The object is very similar to the one at the start of this movie, he says.

“We tried to see if we could move it – we couldn’t,” he said. “We went through the whole thing to see if there was some kind of writing on it. There’s no.”

He said he lifted one of the biologists onto his shoulders and they put a lot of weight on it, but it wouldn’t move at all.

“We saw a lot of weird stuff in the desert,” he said, “but nothing like that.

We don’t know how long the object has been there, he says. As to whether he felt the object had extraterrestrial origins, he said he could have without the marks in the ground left by a cement saw.

“You can see where they took a cement saw and cut the sandstone to put the thing in. I guess it’s probably cemented because it’s very strong,” he said. “It really looks like it’s totally artificial.”

They are not communicating the exact location at this time due to security concerns and possible vandalism.

“They asked us not to reveal his location. They’re just afraid that people will get hurt and that some stuff is trying to make it happen. It’s in a very remote area of southern Utah, that’s about all they want us to say.

This is not an area that they frequent more than every three years when they work with the DWR to do biological counts on bighorn sheep.

“We just literally flew right over this thing, or I don’t think we would have even seen it,” he said.

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street told St. George News that they do not plan to investigate further how the metal got there.

“He will stay where he is. I think it’s pretty much anchored where it is, ”Street said. “There is also a fairly deep base. Without construction equipment, you can’t just go in and take it off.

Street said that if it was done by one person, and they found out who it was, that person could potentially be charged with littering and potentially damaging the floor.

“I know there is a federal code that follows BLM and Forest Service lands that prohibits this.”
