Fallout against Senator Josh Hawley for supporting an attempt to challenge Electoral College results in Congress continues as prominent hotel chain withdraws from Florida fundraiser, report says for the Missouri Republican, according to a report.
Hawley was one of many GOP Senators and House Members who announced they would oppose certification of electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden in a joint session of Congress on January 6 – a process which was interrupted by a crowd of supporters of President Trump stormed the Capitol.
The fundraiser at the Portofino Bay Hotel in Universal Orlando was scheduled for February 12-15 and was hosted by Fighting for Missouri, but Loews Hotels, the owner of the Portofino, said it was canceling the event.
“We are horrified and opposed to the events on Capitol Hill and to all those who supported and instigated actions” Loews Hotel said on Twitter Saturday. “In light of these events and for the safety of our guests and our team members, we have informed the host of the February fundraiser that it will no longer be held at Loews hotels.”
Publisher Simon & Schuster, a day after the Jan.6 Capitol riot, canceled a book deal with Hawley, claiming he no longer supported the Senator for “his role in what has become a dangerous threat to our democracy and our freedom ”.
“After witnessing the disturbing and deadly insurgency that took place Wednesday in Washington, DC, Simon & Schuster has decided to cancel the publication of Senator Josh Hawley’s next book, ‘The Tyranny of Big Tech,'” said Simon & Schuster.
Thousands of pro-Trump supporters descended on Capitol Hill, smashed windows and smashed building doors, sending lawmakers rushing to safety in unknown locations.
Five people have died from the chaos, including a Capitol Police officer who died of injuries while defending the Capitol.
Electoral College certification resumed hours later after law enforcement officials were able to clear the Capitol of rioting and confirm Biden was the winner in the November 3 presidential election.
In a statement, Hawley’s office said the senator would not be intimidated.
“If these companies don’t want the Conservatives talking, they should just be honest about it. But to equate leading a debate on the Senate floor with incitement to violence is a lie, and it is dangerous. I will not be dissuaded from representing my constituents and I will not give in to pressure from left-wing companies, ”Hawley said in the statement.
