You can blame it all on Kang. As the time-traveling Avengers villain technically did not appear in Loki, the character he’s a variant of – He Who Remains – was revealed to be the series’ main villain, played by Lovecraft Country alumnus Jonathan Majors. As many of us expected, Loki ended up having lasting ramifications for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, so much so that series director Kate Herron suggests that it was Kang (or whoever remains) who orchestrated all of the events that we have seen so far, including the entirety of Avengers: Endgame.
“I guess, by the logic of our show, yes, because it says, ‘I paved the road, you just took it. “I guess in theory, yeah, he would’ve scripted that because through our show that’s what we’re saying,” Herron said recently. The Direct. “Everything has been predetermined by this character, although until now we thought the characters had free will. Which, in my opinion, is kind of the fun carpet of our series, isn’t it. ? “
The One Who Remains and, in turn, the Time Variation Authority have been tasked with keeping the timeline sacred to itself so that another multiversal war does not break out. With access to time travel capabilities, this meant that TVA was able to “carve” full timelines – and technically universes – on a whim, practically allowing them to play God.
“Even in the main it’s like our timeline, TVA thinks time is right, and in fact it isn’t. It’s a circle at the end,” the filmmaker added. “I think that’s always the fun thing with any MCU project. I hope that with the rest of this phase, it will continue to subvert our expectations. It will really move the story forward.”
