The release of Lone Echo II for the Oculus Rift platform on August 24 will mark the end of an era as the last exclusive project funded by Facebook for its PC VR platform.

We’ve known this long enough with Facebook ending sales of Rift S, canceling future PC VR-only headsets, moving the Medium Sculpting app development team to Adobe, lack of updates or of newly announced titles. for Rift S, and the continued focus on autonomous virtual reality with Quest 2.

Facebook officially confirmed to UploadVR this week “we currently have no plans to create any additional Rift exclusive titles.”

The company still supports PC VR through wired Oculus Link and Wireless Air Link with nearly a third of SteamVR users logging into Valve’s Steam store from Quest 2 to play games on that platform. 18% and 5% of SteamVR users log into Rift S and Rift respectively.

You can take a trip down memory lane with David Heaney’s 2019 roster commemorating most of the exclusive Rift Facebook-funded titles for the platform. The graphics power of 2019 Asgard’s Wrath from Sanzaru Games was the studio’s last title before Facebook acquired it in 2020 while Sony purchased Insomniac Games, the creators of the Rift-exclusive 2019 shooter Stormland. Respawn Entertainment was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017 and in late 2020 dropped its Facebook-funded title Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond on Steam alongside the Oculus store for Rift.

Facebook has so far acquired five VR game development studios starting with Beat Games (the developers behind Beat Saber) in 2019 and most recently POPULATION: ONE battle royale devs BigBox VR in June this year. The company also bought developer Onward Down for Interactive and Ready At Dawn, the studio behind Lone Echo II as well as one of the best VR Echo VR team sports.

Resident Evil 4 will arrive exclusively in Quest 2 later this year, and Facebook is also funding Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed VR games.
