The Trey Lance Hype Train runs at full speed – and probably near full capacity. It’s amazing how a few nearly flawless practices – against second team defense – can influence training camp chatter.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco attempted to slow down the Trey Lance Hype Train during an interview this week on KNBR. Of course, that was immediately after adding fuel.

The well-respected journalist has covered the 49ers for nearly three decades. Fans appreciate Maiocco’s opinion. 49ers play-by-play announcer Greg Papa asked Maiocco if he’s ever seen a rookie quarterback as special as Lance in all his years covering the team.

Maiocco’s response was very revealing.

“No, not even close. Not even close. No,” Maiocco said.

It’s worth noting that the 49ers haven’t recruited many top quarterbacks in recent years. The only drafted in the first two rounds since Alex Smith was selected No.1 overall in 2005 was Colin Kaepernick in 2011. Plus, we haven’t even seen Lance in a pre-season game yet. It’s still early.

“And yes, I want to pump the brakes,” Maiocco continued. “Let’s not get too excited because they only trained on pads for two days. But that’s it. He has just the right touch. He acts like a seasoned pro. He stands there at the press conference and responds. to your questions. And then you go back and look at what he said, and you realize, ‘Wow, he didn’t say anything’, which is exactly what a quarterback should be. well, talk alright, but really don’t say a lot.

“The way he was so respectful to Jimmy Garoppolo, from what I understand, just all the work he put in in those 40 days he left the facility, he came back a better player of soccer.”

Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel told reporters this week that Lance spends his free time working on the fundamentals and mechanics.

“He really took that long,” McDaniel said, “because we told them,“ Hey look, you’re going to have to worry about all these other things (when you get back) ”in terms of defenses, training, reads, all of these things. “

Lance took this seriously and the coaches were impressed with his progress. The media too.

“He throws the ball with precision,” Maiocco said. “He throws the ball rhythmically when it needs to be pierced in there. He throws it with a nice touch when it needs to. Just the last three days, I think that’s where he started running. Dude, he’s just watching the game. ”
