Shortly after Nick Sirianni’s the hiring has become official, longtime Philadelphia Eagles assistant coach Duce Staley has asked to be released from his contract, according to Mike Garofolo of NFL Network. Staley, a former Eagles backer who has been on the Philadelphia coaching staff since 2011, has reportedly been interviewed to become the team’s next head coach. That post was eventually filled by Sirianni, who comes to Philadelphia after spending the last three seasons with the Colts’ offensive coordinator.
Staley, who will speak to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie about his contract, has a few teams who are interested in him, according to Garofolo. Staley’s departure would mean the Eagles would have to find a new running back coach, a position Staley has held since 2013. The Bears and Lions are among the teams who have an interest in adding Staley to their staff, according to Garofolo.
The fifth champion in franchise history, Staley helped the Eagles qualify for three consecutive NFC title games from 2001 to 2003. After seven seasons in Philadelphia, Staley ended his career with the Steelers, winning a ring. Super Bowl as a member of the 2005 Pittsburgh Championship team. Staley, after serving as a trainee coach during the 2010 season, officially joined the Eagles staff as the team’s special teams quality control coach in 2011. Staley, who was elevated to coach running backs in 2013, was appointed assistant head coach in 2018 shortly. after the Eagles’ 41-33 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.
Some of the successful running backs under Staley include LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles, Ryan Mathews, LeGarrette Blount, Jay Ajayi and Miles Sanders. McCoy was named to two Pro Bowls in two seasons with Staley as running backs coach. In 2017, the Blount and Ajayi duo helped clinch Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl title. Sanders, the team’s 2019 second-round pick, has become one of the NFL’s top young running backs.
Before hiring Sirianni, Lurie alluded to Staley when asked about finding his team’s coaches.
“I think we are very open and it is paramount to make sure that we have some of the best minority candidates in the search. It is very important I think for us, for the league and it is our priority,” said Lurie. “(Duce) is a great representative of the Eagles and knows our values. I would expect him to be part of the research as well.”
