Maryland State Senator Thomas “Mike” Miller (D), the oldest lawmaker in the United States, resigned Wednesday citing health concerns that prevented him from completing his term.
A letter from Miller to the President of the Maryland State Senate, Senator Bill Ferguson (D), obtained by Maryland Matters, has praised Miller’s colleagues over the years. Miller said he would resign due to his “weak” body.

“For over half a century, I have had the privilege of serving the people of Maryland. In my 45 years in the Maryland Senate, I have served with so many senators of integrity and commitment – men and women from across the state who have dedicated themselves to making our state a better place in the world. name of our citizens, ”Miller wrote.
“It is now with immense sadness that I must write to you today to inform you that my service will end, effective today. My heart and mind remain strong, but my body has become too weak to meet the demands of another legislative session, ”he added.
Miller, who stepped down as leader last year, was the longest-serving speaker of a U.S. legislature. He was first chosen president of the Maryland State Senate in late 1986.
By the time he stepped down, Miller’s tenure was hailed by politicians across the state aisle, including Republican Gov. of Maryland, Larry Hogan.
“As the country’s longest-serving president, President Miller has been a strong and unifying leader of the legislature and state. His constant presence and signature humor will be sorely missed as President, but we are pleased to know that Mike will continue to represent the people of District 27 in the Senate, ”Hogan said last year.
