Lonzo Ball once only wanted to play for the Lakers, but he now seems excited about a new start in New Orleans.
The situation was clear, even as his father LaVar was trying to "express" it, so it made sense that the Los Angeles Lakers take the No. 2 overall Lonzo Ball in 2017. Two seasons hampered by injuries Ball went to the pelicans in New Orleans as part of the exchange that brought Anthony Davis to the Lakers.
Despite the loss of their star player, the Pélicans have a lot of talent in place with the choice number 1 of the general, Zion Williamson, in front of the poster. But guard Jrue Holiday remains in place, to go with the veteran additions J.J. Redick and Derrick Favors as well as Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart join Ball after the deal with Davis and the great rookie player Jaxson Hayes.
Playing for the Lakers requires a lot of attention and drama, and his father adds a lot of fuel to the fire. Speaking in front of ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk on Saturday after filming the PUBG Mobile Team Event Up Showdown Superstar, Ball talked about the trade.
"Honestly, I was a little excited," he said. "I thought someone would be moved soon enough. I knew that Anthony Davis wanted to go wrong. Whenever you can get a guy like that, you will have to do what you need to do to get it. So, honestly, I was already expecting that, and I was happy to leave with two guys with whom I am comfortable at B.I. [Brandon Ingram] and JHart [Josh Hart]. I can not wait to see what we can do.
"I tell people that I was a beginner, I would have probably been sad," Ball added after being traded. "I'm from LA, my whole family is here and I want to be Laker. But being in the league for two years, knowing it's a business, as long as you play, it's a blessing in itself. I am excited to start.
Ball averaged 10.0 points, 6.4 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 1.6 interceptions per game in more than 99 games in the NBA, while shooting a combined total of 38% from the ground and 31, 5% since the beginning of his career. Improvement as a shooter will be the key to unlocking a new level for him, and better health would be of great help too, as knee and ankle issues have derailed him. A change of scenery can not hurt either, and Ball is clearly happy to have a fresh start in New Orleans.
