While the Los Angeles Lakers were awaiting the return of LeBron James and Rajon Rondo, they suffered a further injury when Lonzo Ball collided with James Ennis III in a January match with the Houston Rockets.

Ball immediately sank into pain, catching his left ankle before being taken off the field by his teammates. The bullet was taken for an x-ray, which came back negative. A sprained ankle was diagnosed at that time and an MRI the next day confirmed the injury.

Although Ball suffered a sprained grade 3 left ankle, tearing the ligament, he avoided surgery. The Lakers provided a four to six week schedule for his recovery.

However, according to Tania Ganguli of L.A. Times, Ball also suffers from a bruise at the bone that could delay his return:

Lakers leader Lonzo Ball has a bruise on his left ankle that the team says could extend his recovery by six weeks, according to two people close to Ball's condition.

Sunday will mark five weeks since Ball's MRI. He would have recently run on a submarine treadmill and would progress well in his recovery.

His absence not only robbed the Lakers of their starting goaltender, but the team's defense fell into a landslide without him. Several of Ball's teammates have indicated that his next comeback would be one of the keys for the Lakers to continue qualifying for the playoffs.
