Mardi Gras house floats have sprung up across New Orleans in the hundreds over the past few weeks, but it has been impossible to find them all. Until today in any case.

Now, thanks to a large map provided by the Krewe of House Floats, fans of the new Crescent City Carnival custom will know exactly where to look.

The map went live on February 1 on the krewe’s website, kreweofhousefloats.org.

The official map shows house tanks of the 39 sub-krewes dotting New Orleans, several states, and even a few other countries. There are house floats everywhere – Alaska, Australia, United Arab Emirates, London and beyond.

The map lists the house float name, address, sub-krewe and optimal viewing time. Organizers are reminding people not to hurry when looking at homes in an effort to protect everyone during the coronavirus pandemic.

The map was part of the Krewe of House Floats plan from the start.

It was late November, just days after town hall revealed there would be no parades in 2021, when Megan Boudreaux, an Algiers-based insurance claims manager, hatched a modest plan. Boudreaux decided that since there would be no real floats during the next carnival, she would decorate her porch as if it were a float. On Shrove Tuesday, she planned to throw trinkets at passers-by. That’s all there was to do.

So she posted her plan on Facebook, looking for neighbors interested in turning their homes into stationary floats as well. Unexpectedly, his Krewe of House Floats page exploded with hundreds, then thousands of followers, eager to find a way to celebrate the COVID carnival.

As Boudreaux explained in a video on the krewe’s Facebook page, “She’s a completely volunteer krewe who came out of the woodworking business on a zero budget and took her from something that didn’t exist there. is two and a half months old and toured this amazing global krewe with 3,000 participating houses. ”

A map was in the works almost from the start and Boudreaux hopes the complicated mapping will be uploaded without a hitch. But if not, she says, she hopes everyone realizes “We have day jobs and families and no one is paid. So be patient with us. It is a labor of love.”

The deadline has passed to add more house floats to the card.

Boudreaux did not invent the decoration of the carnival house, of course, but by founding her organization at the perfect time, she fostered a phenomenon which not only provided catharsis during the contagion of the coronavirus, but which could become a carnival party for all time to come.

Tongue in cheek, Boudreaux began to call himself the admiral of the house float fleet. In a post on Friday, she reminded attendees and fans that despite the popularity of the activity, everyone needs to remain aware of social distancing.

“Considering that some of these incredible facilities are already starting to cause traffic jams,” she wrote, “this seems like a good time to remind people not to hurry! Take your shot, grab your throw and move around yourself so that the next visitors can enjoy.! All of us who decorated will have to be careful that people do not linger. After all, a stuck parade becomes boring anyway after the first drop of throws! Continue! ”
