Looks like one of video game’s biggest crossovers is about to change

In the ’90s, the very idea of ​​Capcom and SNK working together was as unlikely as Sega and Nintendo laying down their guns and making friends (like that would never happen, right ?!). So when these two big names in fighting games announced a crossover series at the end of the decade, it caused quite a stir.

We have Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 on the Dreamcast, alongside SNK vs. Capcom: the clash of card hunters on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Along with this we also have SNK vs. Capcom: Millennium Match on SNK’s handheld – arguably one of the best portable individual fighters ever. This collaboration would also give us Capcom vs. SNK 2 on Dreamcast (later ported to PS2, GameCube and Xbox) and SNK vs. Capcom Choas on Neo Geo, as well as the rather disappointing SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS shortly after.

As the name of this sub-series suggests, each game featured characters from the respective franchises belonging to these two Japanese giants. So the Street Fighter cast clashed with the stars of King of Fighters – that sort of thing. Match of the Millennium took things to the next level and even included figures like Arthur from Ghosts and Goblins in its own mini-game. Interestingly, the Neo Geo Pocket Color title could connect to the Dreamcast Capcom vs SNK via a special link cable, allowing you to unlock characters by earning points when playing on the go.

According to the South Korean Rating Council, SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium is heading to the Switch. The game was recently rated for release in this region – a pretty solid indication that a game is coming in. This will likely be part of SNK’s current drive to release several of its most notable Neo Geo Pocket Color titles on Switch; we already had SNK Gals Fighters, Samurai Shodown II, The Last Blade: Beyond Fate and Fatal Fury’s first contact.

What makes this new release stand out is that it’s an indication that SNK and Capcom are ready to work together again. Although SNK developed and released this particular game, it contains Capcom’s IP address, so we’ll assume that a new deal had to be signed for this re-release to take place.

Could we potentially see other titles in the Capcom vs SNK series released on modern platforms? Or maybe both companies are working on a whole new version of the crossover?
