The “Lord of the Rings” star talks about the most heartbreaking thing the director has ever said to her.
Peter Jackson is known to be a demanding filmmaker, especially on the set of his Oscar winning trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”. Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King,” recently opened Cinema Blend’s ReelBlend podcast about the challenges of filming JRR. Tolkien adaptation in New Zealand, and did not mince words on a particularly painful moment with his director.
“The most painful thing Peter Jackson has ever said to me… you know, he’s a man of few words.” He’s a very, very stoic guy. He can be performative when he wants to or has to, ”Astin said. “He can play acts, and he’s very articulate and so on. But on a daily basis, Peter Jackson is basically like a quiet guy. He kind of lets the work do the talking, and his direction has always been very minimal. Most of the time his direction would be, “Let’s do it again”… But he came up to me at one point and he looked at me and he said, “I just didn’t believe it. Oh my God, he might as well have been – it was like a Mortal Kombat death blow. It was as if he had pulled my hair out of my body, and my spine came out. … [But] it was, it was true. It was true that I was not invested, that I was no longer. I was out of character. I was in a bad mood. I was out of… I just wasn’t there.
Although Astin did not reveal what movie or scene this encounter took place on, he added, “It was brutal. And he didn’t want it to be brutal. He wanted to land. He didn’t want it to be brutal, but it was a perfect direction. And he was absolutely right. And it made me better. It made me concentrate more.
Either way, “The Lord of the Rings” lives on, with a 4K edition of the trilogy on sale December 1, just in time for the holidays, and an Amazon series coming next year.
