MTV’s Video Music Awards COVID-19 protocol was too heavy for Lorde this year.
After learning that she would no longer perform at the music awards ceremony, the pop artist released an explanation days later.
“We were planning this incredibly amazing intimate multi-body dance performance, without fully understanding the (very necessary!) Safety protocols in place,” she wrote. “I can’t do anything less than great for you guys.”
She responded to her fans’ concerns and assured them that she was “absolutely fine”.
“There will be a lot more TV performances, don’t worry,” Lorde promised.
The announcement comes amid a wave of COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles County. As of September 9, there were 2,218 new cases, 49 new deaths and 1,385 ongoing hospitalizations in the county. MTV’s awards show is scheduled for Sunday, September 12.
The increase in cases and severity has resulted in stricter social distancing and mask protocols, affecting VMAs.
So far, no other artist has left the ship. Justin Bieber, who has seven nominations, will return to perform for the first time since 2015 alongside Lil Nas X and Camila Cabello.
Lorde’s statement comes a day after the release of a surprise EP featuring her most popular songs from her latest album “Solar Power”. But the release comes with a twist: the songs are in te reo Maori, New Zealand’s indigenous language.
Of course, fans were both shocked and excited by his creative and inclusive idea, with one person Tweeter it’s “the coolest thing” there is.
