Lori Loughlin will serve her two-month prison sentence for bribing college admissions officers, sources familiar with her case have said TMZ. Insiders said the judge in Loughlin’s case wanted her to serve the full sentence, regardless of good behavior or other factors. The only thing likely to get Loughlin out early is the coronavirus pandemic.
The sources said Loughlin entered federal prison in Dublin, northern California on Friday, where she will be isolated from other prisoners for her first two weeks. This is to prevent it from introducing possible contagion to the prison population, as the outbreaks of COVID-19 in detention centers have been catastrophic this year. These conditions even motivated the early release of some prominent prisoners, including former lawyer for President Donald Trump, Michael Cohen. This decision would be left to the prison council and not to the sentencing judge.
Loughlin will also not be eligible under the provisions of The First Step Act, a prison reform bill passed by Republican lawmakers and signed by Trump. It orders the Bureau of Prisons to give inmates 15% off their sentences, during which time they typically transition to a halfway house or other care. However, this only applies to sentences of one year or more, so Loughlin’s two months will not be affected.
If a coronavirus outbreak hits Dublin Federal Prison, the Bureau of Prisons will have the option of releasing her early to house arrest, but even then that is not guaranteed. The pandemic also means Loughlin will not have visitation rights for the duration of his stay.
Loughlin is now a convicted felon, having pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit electronic and mail fraud. Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, had previously rejected a plea deal when numerous other defendants in the same case cooperated with authorities. The two ended up leading culprits in May. While Loughlin began his time in prison on Friday, Giannulli has yet to show up for hers.
