A bizarre multi-hour chase in Los Angeles ended Wednesday morning with a suspect in custody and his badly damaged vehicle – with at least three flat tires – sitting on a freeway.

A video posted to social media around 1:30 a.m. local time showed police walking towards the allegedly “armed and dangerous” suspect as he stood in front of his vehicle. He was quickly surrounded, handcuffed and taken away.

Minutes earlier, sparks flew from the left wheel on the driver’s side of the suspect’s vehicle as the rim fell, leaving the silver Chevy Malibu ultimately disabled after hours of travel with at least three of its tires damaged.

Throughout the evening, a video posted by FOX 11 in Los Angeles and other stations had shown the Malibu with Oklahoma license plates traveling through the city, largely on Interstate 110, with vehicles police station nearby and news helicopters above.

What started out as a high-speed chase after 7 p.m. eventually slowed to less than 5 mph after the suspect’s vehicle was damaged by a strip of spikes, KNBC-TV of Los Angeles reported.

Police were pursuing cautiously because the driver was suspected of being in possession of a gun, the report said.

The prosecution’s caution was consistent with police training, Joe Buscaino, a Los Angeles city councilor who served as a Los Angeles police officer, told the police station.

He noted that the vehicle chase took place amid a growing period of crime in the country’s second largest city.

“I predict it will get worse before it gets better, unfortunately,” Buscaino said.

The chase covered stretches of Interstate 110, in both north and south directions, when the driver exited and re-entered the freeway, KNBC-TV reported.
