Los Angeles hostage drama: gun suspect dead, woman safe after SWAT unit response

Los Angeles police shot dead an armed suspect and rescued a hostage on Friday after the suspect pointed his gun at the victim’s head, police said.

LAPD agents were chasing a suspect on foot after he allegedly shot people in the city center and tried to hijack a woman in a car, authorities said. Officers followed the suspect to an apartment building and observed his actions on a surveillance camera.

“They saw the suspect in a hallway armed with a gun forcing a woman to accompany him,” the department tweeted on Friday evening. “At that time, we knew we had a hostage situation. As LAPD personnel were outside the complex, they saw through a window, the suspect pointing a gun at the head of the ‘hostage.”

SWAT agents then entered the building on the basis of “already incredibly violent actions and fearing that the suspect would kill the hostage”.

The suspect was shot dead by police and died instantly. The hostage was taken to hospital, but his state of health was not immediately known, police said.

A witness allegedly recorded the incident across the street and posted a video on Twitter. The video shows the suspect grabbing the hostage, then shows SWAT agents entering – along with the sound of several gunshots.

The department said officers initially responded to reports of an armed man suspected of committing crimes in the area, which included putting a gun in a man’s face and shooting – although the weapon did not explode – and to fire at 14 years old. -old inside a business.
