After 17 years with Coca-Cola, launching a variety of products, LeBron James signed with rival PepsiCo, sources confirmed to ESPN.
The Los Angeles Lakers star is expected to promote the Mountain Dew brand, which became a major sponsor of the NBA after PepsiCo took over as the league’s official drinks partner in 2015.
James signed with Coke in the summer of 2003 ahead of his rookie season; the company joined Nike and Upper Deck as the oldest supporting partners. His deal with Coca-Cola expired last year when the parties couldn’t agree on an extension.
Over the years, James has had his own flavor of Powerade and his version of Sprite, and was at the heart of a Coca-Cola marketing campaign with Yao Ming for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His first TV commercial was for Sprite in 2003.
Forbes ranks James as the best active player in the NBA in terms of supporting income, exceeding $ 50 million annually.
Front Office Sports first reported the signing.
