Los Angeles Lakers PG Dennis Schroder vs. Brooklyn Nets due to protocols

LOS ANGELES – Dennis Schroder missed the Lakers’ game against the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night due to NBA health and safety protocols, the team announced about an hour before the game started.

Schroder had started all 29 Lakers games this season, averaging 14.2 points, 4.3 assists and 3.6 rebounds. Wesley Matthews started in his place against the Nets.

He is only the third Lakers player to miss time due to health and safety protocols this season, joining Alex Caruso and Alfonzo McKinnie. LA are one of the few teams to have no games postponed due to COVID-19, with more than a third of the season already over.

Schroder’s absence was the latest blow to what could be a potential preview of the final. The Lakers were without Anthony Davis, who came out with a right calf strain and Achilles tendinosis. The Nets missed Kevin Durant for a third straight game with left hamstring strain.

Schroder’s news clearly caught the Lakers off guard. During his pre-game remarks, coach Frank Vogel pointed out that Schroder was key to Los Angeles’ plans to try and stop Kyrie Irving.

“They’re prolific on the offensive end of the ball so it’s going to be a good challenge for our defense. I can’t wait to see the Dennis Schroder-Kyrie Irving game,” said Vogel. “I think that’s a dynamic Dennis is giving us this year, and I can’t wait to see this game.”

The Lakers haven’t announced how long Schroder could miss or disclose what triggered the health and safety protocols.
