A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was killed Wednesday in front of a sheriff's police station but had to survive, investigators said.

Someone fired at the back of the departmental station, located about 70 miles north of Los Angeles, near a helipad, shortly before 3 pm. and hit the MP at the shoulder, MP Morgan Arteaga told Fox News.

The unidentified MP was taken to hospital with a non-fatal gunshot wound.

"My deputy is in a stable state in a local hospital. He was hit by a blow to the shoulder, "said Sheriff Alex Villaneuva, according to the Los Angeles Times. "We have a containment in a nearby building and we are following all our tactical steps right now."

The Times reported that the suspect was inside a four-story structure. Tactical units arrived and the deputies used binoculars to examine the building for potential sniper fire and to clean nearby buildings.

"The Lancaster deputies are still cleaning up the area and looking for the suspect and the place from which the shots were fired," Arteaga said.

The incident occurred a few days after an officer from the California Highway Patrol was shot and killed during a shootout at Riverside, a town located 90 km east of Los Angeles.

Constable André Moye, 34, was filling papers to seize a vehicle when Aaron Luther, 49, shot him with a rifle. Luther then died during a shootout with the forces of order.
