Officers at the Rapides parish sheriff's office said the investigators had been made aware of the charges on April 1, after receiving a complaint of sexual misconduct involving children, according to a statement.

"Fountain committed sex crimes on minors while he was residing in the Pineville area," the statement said. "The crimes allegedly began in the early 1970s and continued until the early 1980s."

On 9 April, 50 people were charged with first-degree rape and another 50 on 12 April. The sheriff's office added that he had added the second round of charges after identifying other victims.

"During their investigation, the detectives were able to gather evidence in support of the initial allegations that made it possible to establish the probable cause," the office said. "While Fountain remained in prison, the detectives continued their investigation and other victims were identified."

The fountain had a $ 1 million bond on Tuesday night. It is unclear when he retained the services of a lawyer.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and had asked anyone with information about other potential victims to come forward.
