The Louisiana Department of Health reported 2,812 additional cases of coronavirus – and 680 new probable cases – as well as 24 additional deaths in its noon Friday update, a worrying increase in the number of cases in Louisiana after the state seemed to avoid the sharp increases seen in the United States in recent weeks.
The number of new cases represents the biggest jump since at least early August, when the state was still in the midst of an outbreak of cases that prompted the governor to issue a statewide mask warrant and to close the bars.

While the rest of the country is seeing the largest increase in cases since the start of the pandemic, Louisiana has largely avoided the tidal wave so far. But officials here have warned in recent days that the state is seeing the first signs of such an increase.
Friday’s tally includes, for the first time, the number of cases confirmed by antigen tests, rapid tests often used in hospitals. The federal government approved the use of antigen testing in May, but the state’s health department did not report cases discovered through rapid testing until Friday.

Cases discovered by antigenic tests often need to be confirmed by a more precise molecular test.
Including the 680 “probable” cases from antigen testing, the state added 3,492 new cases on Friday. This means that there have been 2,812 confirmed cases. In total, the total number of cases surpassed 200,000 on Friday including probable cases.
The new cases come on 37,432 new tests, including 33,326 molecular tests and 4,106 antigen tests.
The number of people hospitalized with the virus jumped from 16 to 692, the highest level since September 10. The number of patients requiring ventilators has increased by three.

The rise in cases comes as New Orleans officials warn there is “very little time” to bypass the peaks. Officials pointed to the clusters associated with Halloween about two weeks ago, but also other settings.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards is expected to tackle the peak across the state at a press conference in the afternoon on Friday.

Louisiana began reopening for Phase 1 on May 15-16, then moved to Phase 2 on June 5. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards extended Louisiana’s Phase 2 restrictions twice in August before moving the state to Phase 3 on September 11.
