Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (right) urged residents to get vaccinated on Twitter and at a press conference on Friday, highlighting the surge in COVID-19 cases the state has seen.

Edwards said during the press conference the state had an “astronomical” increase in cases while having a low vaccination rate.

Louisiana has only 39% of its residents fully vaccinated, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Deaths from COVID have increased dramatically since June, particularly among Louisianans under 40. These are not just numbers. These are our sisters and brothers, ”Edwards posted on Twitter Friday.

“COVID vaccines can prevent this immeasurable suffering. We don’t have to lose any more Louisianans to COVID, ”he added.

The state has recorded nearly 650,000 cases of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic and nearly 12,000 deaths.

The recent increase was shown in numbers by the state’s health department with 32% more cases recorded in August than in July.

There has also been a 1,467 percent increase in deaths from COVID-19 among people under the age of 40.

“I can tell you that in the past two days, 28% of all new cases we report are in children aged 0 to 17,” Edwards said at the press conference.

The increase in cases in children comes as students are preparing or are already back in school.
