A Louisiana policeman providing security at a high school basketball game in New Orleans has been shot and killed in a mask dispute, authorities said, and a suspect has was immediately taken into police custody.
Tulane University Police Officer Martinus Mitchum was shot and killed on Friday while working at George Washington Carver High School in the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard, the New Orleans Police Department said. .
John Shallerhorn, 35, was indicted early Saturday for armed robbery and first degree murder of a police officer, Fox 8 reported, citing the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office jail records.

After arriving at high school on Friday, Shallerhorn allegedly robbed a 39-year-old man sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot, lifting his shirt to brandish a gun and demanding the victim’s chain of medallions, police said.
The victim handed the chain to Shallerhorn, who then attempted to enter the school but was arrested for not wearing a mask.
A physical altercation ensued with a school employee, police said, before Mitchum intervened and escorted Shallerhorn.
Shallerhorn, as he was leaving, allegedly shot the officer twice. He then placed the gun on the ground and was taken into custody, police said.

Before Mitchum’s name was released, New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said the murder victim was also a reserve officer of the City’s 2nd Constable.

Records show Shallerhorn was previously arrested in August 2019 for alleged indecent behavior with a minor, but the Orléans parish prosecutor’s office denied the charge in November 2019.
