A police officer from Louisiana was killed Friday and another was injured following a car chase in a suburb of New Orleans, authorities said.
The authorities identified Mandeville police captain Vincent "Vinny" Liberto Jr. as the officer who died as a result of his injuries. Liberto was the department since 1994 and had served in the Marine Corps for 10 years.

"He leaves a woman in mourning, children in mourning," said Sticker about Liberto. "We have an organization that has not lost an agent for more than 50 years and is saddened, the whole law enforcement community is saddened, we are a very united community. Is a bad day for the Mandeville Police Department. "
At a press conference, Gerald Sticker, the Mandeville police chief, said the injured policeman, being treated at the Lakeview Regional Medical Center, is expected to survive.

Witnesses testified that the prosecution began shortly before 2 pm after a stoppage of traffic near national roads 22 and 190. A suspect exited the vehicle and shot at Liberto. Another officer arrived and was shot dead, reported WVUE-TV. It was not clear if the officers fought back.

The last time a Mandeville police officer died in the line of duty was in 1958, the police station reported.
"The only thing we can do now is to ask the community's prayers for the injured officer and the deceased," said Mandeville Mayor Donald Villere.
Sheriff Randy Smith, of St. Tammany Parish, said that two suspects were in custody and that a weapon had been found. The names of suspects and possible charges are not immediately disclosed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased officer and the injured officer," Smith said.
Mr. Sticker stated that the Louisiana State Police was in charge of the investigation and that she would be asking questions about the causes of the shooting.
Governor John Bel Edwards tweeted about the deadly attack.
"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the police officer, to the people of Mandeville and to the entire police community. @FirstLadyOfLA and I praying for our state today. #lagov #lalege, "he posted.

Pat Brister, president of St. Tammany Parish, said: "When that happens, we are all heartbroken," she said. "But we will meet to support the officers who risk their lives to protect us."
