Matthew Mire, 31, was arrested without incident on Saturday night, Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Lamar Davis told a news conference.

CNN’s attempts to find out whether Mire has a lawyer or if he has been formally charged failed on Sunday.

Mire is believed to be the gunman who killed LSP Master Trooper Adam Gaubert early Saturday morning, Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre said at a press conference.

Initial reports indicate that Gaubert, a 19 year old Louisiana State Police veteran, was ambushed by a gunman and killed while in his vehicle outside of Baton Rouge, Davis said.

Before he allegedly shot and killed the state soldier in Ascension Parish, Mire allegedly shot two other people from Livingston Parish, authorities said.

“It started around midnight in Livingston Parish where this Matthew Mire shot two people. Then he went to Ascension Parish where he shot two more. One died of his wounds. “Webre said.

That victim was identified as Pamela Adair, 37, who was rushed to hospital and died, according to a Facebook post from the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.

After that, the shooter allegedly “engaged in a shootout with a soldier near Hoo Shoo Too Road. He tried to kill that soldier there,” Webre said.

“If you saw the soldier’s police vehicle, there was a hole right in the middle of the windshield where this Matthew Mire tried to kill this soldier,” the sheriff said.

During the manhunt, LSP tweeted: “Police are looking for a suspect in the area of Hooshootoo Road in Tiger Bend Road. The white suspect is believed to have exchanged gunshots with the Trooper and is believed to be armed and dangerous. ”

Webre said authorities searched for the suspect on the ground, in the air and in the water.

Even though the suspect is now in custody, “We still don’t know the motive,” Webre said on Saturday evening. “We don’t know why this guy shot five people today.”

The two gunshot victims in Livingston Parish, a man and a woman, are expected to recover after being shot in the arms and leg, according to information from Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard, which was shared in a Facebook post by the Ascension Parish Sheriff. Office.

The third gunshot victim in Ascension Parish, Joseph Schexnayder, 43, is in critical but stable condition, according to another article from the sheriff’s office.

Louisiana State Police paid tribute to Gaubert on Facebook:

“Private Gaubert embodied all we stand for: honor, duty, selfless service and courage. In the days to come, we will mourn his tragic death and honor his service to our department and the citizens of Louisiana.” said state police.

“At this time, we ask that you respect the privacy of Private Gaubert’s family.”
