More than 20 people who attended a two-day high school wrestling tournament in Louisiana said they tested positive for the coronavirus, according to local health officials.
The outbreak among athletes, staff and members of the public comes after about 400 wrestlers took part in the 48th Louisiana Classic wrestling event last week at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, reported The Advocate.
The Louisiana Department of Health is now asking all participants to get tested and self-quarantined – but that doesn’t stop some schools from moving forward with other sporting events.
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association said schools were urged to take precautions, but said several wrestling matches would go as planned, the attorney said.
“Obviously, it’s extremely complicated,” the association’s deputy executive director Adam MacDowell told the newspaper. “As soon as I receive any material from (Louisiana Department of Health), I will send it to our member schools for further guidance.”
“What we advise at this stage, without having any additional communication with the LDH, is that each school and each school program contact their local regional health director and go through the protocols if they have participated in this tournament” , MacDowell said.
“I know there are a number of competitions and doubles tournaments that have been canceled,” he said. “But I also know that some are still at stake.”
Pictures and videos from the Louisiana Classic show that no social distancing was observed and that while some spectators wore masks, many did not.
