Louisville completed a regular season sweep of Duke with a thrilling 80-73 overtime win over the Blue Devils on Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Cards found a way to win despite losing Malik Williams early in the second half after the tall man injured his right foot again, despite losing David Johnson to fouls late in the season. second foul, and despite losing Jae’Lyn Withers to fouls. in the middle of the overtime period.

How were they able to overcome these obstacles while facing an unconscious Matthew Hurt? The answer begins and ends with Carlik Jones.

Once again, the transfer of the graduates from Radford was great for the U of L. Playing every 45-minute second of the game except for 30 seconds, Jones scored 26 points, a team-high, six rebounds, distributed four assists, and perhaps most notable of all, did not have a single turnover. He scored seven of Louisville’s 15 points in overtime, including an icy pull-up pull-up to put the Cardinals ahead of five with 37 seconds left.

Jones’s heroism couldn’t completely eclipse the effort of Hurt, who set the U-L on fire again, this time at a career-high 37 points. He was less effective on the home stretch, however, thanks in large part to a formidable defensive effort from Samuell Williamson, who took over from Hurt late against Johnson and Withers.

As good as Jones was, Williamson was not far behind him in the hero department. The second-year forward continued his stellar game run, scoring 14 points and posting 12 rebounds in 42 minutes of action.

With the win, Louisville has now earned three straight wins over Duke and two straight at Cameron Indoor Stadium. U of L also remain the only program in the country to have faced Mike Krzyzewski at least 10 times and to have a record of victories against Coach K.

There’s a lot more to say about this one – Quinn’s three-way and clutch free throws, Jae’Lyn’s random shining moments, CARLIK DUNKING – but my God, what a win. It’s such a serious performance in a big place that we’ve seen it from a Cardinal team for a long time.

The big wins on Saturday night at this end of the season are simply the best. Everyone should enjoy it tonight.
